We are deeply saddened by the recent mining-related chemical spill in Northern Zambia and the potential environmental impact it may have downstream. Our thoughts are with the affected communities and ecosystems.
It is important to note that the spill occurred over 400km upstream from Kafue National Park. At Musekese Camp, located inside the park, we have been closely monitoring the situation. Regular water testing along the Kafue River, both near and within the park, has so far shown no visible effects from the spill. pH levels remain stable, and no fish or wildlife die-offs have been observed. Given the natural dilution from the many tributaries of the Kafue, such as the Lufupa and Lunga Rivers, and the exceptional rains this season, we do not anticipate any impact on wildlife or the game-viewing experience in the park.
Furthermore, from a water safety perspective, our camp’s drinking water is not drawn from the Kafue River, but from inland boreholes, which are entirely separate from the affected river system.
We remain committed to ongoing monitoring and will provide updates as needed. This incident is a stark reminder of the responsibility industries have in safeguarding Zambia’s natural heritage.
